Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards open for entry
15 July 2019
Engineering Project of the Year winners at the Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards 2018.
Established in 2010 to showcase and celebrate engineering innovation and excellence, 2019 will mark the 10th anniversary of the flagship awards event for the profession.
Engineers Ireland is calling on engineering organisations and leaders to showcase and celebrate their achievements and skill by submitting an entry to the 2019 Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards.
Caroline Spillane, director general of Engineers Ireland, said: “The Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards celebrate engineers at all stages of their careers, and applaud the significant contribution engineers make to society.
“Our 13 award categories are open to engineering leaders and teams who have made a significant impact on society and have demonstrated exceptional engineering vision and skill through their work. Our award categories span the wide range of engineering disciplines, and we look forward to receiving entries from all sectors.”
New category announced
The Sustainability Award, sponsored by Irish Water, has been newly introduced for 2019 and is open to all disciplines of engineering and environmental industries.
This award will be presented to an individual or team who have excelled in the core pillars of sustainability throughout the delivery of an initiative or project.
The Engineering Education Award has also been reintroduced for 2019. This award recognises innovation and excellence in Irish engineering education and will be presented to a third-level engineering education institution or organisation which co-ordinates initiatives in third-level engineering education institutions.
Colleges of further education may also submit entries which are relevant to engineering education.
Hotly contested awards
The Engineering Project of the Year Award, sponsored by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, is one of the most hotly contested award categories with the winner decided by a weighted voting process involving an online public vote and a panel of expert judges.
This award emphasises the important contribution engineers makes to society and recognises the highest level of achievement in the engineering field.
In previous years, this coveted award title went to Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme by Irish Water, in association with Kerry County Council, Nicholas O’Dwyer, TOBIN Consulting Engineers and Glan Agua (2018) and the redevelopment of Páirc Uí Chaoimh by Malachy Walsh and Partners and supported by Cork County GAA Board and Cork City Council (2017).
Additional categories open for entry include the Geoscience Ireland Award, sponsored by Geoscience Ireland; the Local Authority Engineering Initiative Award, sponsored by Colas Bitumen Emulsions and the Heritage and Conservation Award, sponsored by the OPW.
Members of the public are also encouraged to nominate an Irish engineer that you know who has worked or is working on a project outside of Ireland that clearly contributes to society for the International Engineer of the Year Award.
Celebrating the work of regions, divisions and societies
Each regional branch, engineering division and society committee of Engineers Ireland are also encouraged to nominate their best presentation for the 2018-2019 season in the Best Presentation Award category, co-sponsored by Griffiths and Armour and Beale and Company.

The black-tie Excellence Awards ceremony will take place on Friday, November 15, where a number of additional category awards will be presented on the evening, including: the Outstanding Contribution to Engineering Award; the Innovative Student Engineer of the Year Award, sponsored by Siemens; the Chartered Engineer of the Year Award, sponsored by Arup; the CPD Employer of the Year Award, sponsored by Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland; and the President’s Award, sponsored by CRH.
