Students attend Agritechnica, the international agricultural engineering showcase
20 November 2015
A group of students this year continued the tradition of visiting Agritechnica, the biennial international agricultural engineering showcase, thanks to sponsorship from Massey Ferguson and the Douglas Bomford Trust.
Two of them have shared accounts of their experiences in Germany last week. Year five MEng student, Adam Montgomery, from Co Monaghan, writes:
“I was excited to have the opportunity to be involved with organising our trip to Agritechnica 2015. I was involved with fundraising and organisation of the trip, which provided an opportunity for my classmates and I to visit the world’s premier agricultural engineering show in Hannover, Germany.
“We managed to secure funding from Massey Ferguson and the Douglas Bomford Trust for the trip. On arrival in Hannover we met with the director of marketing services and PR at Massey Ferguson EAME, Campbell Scott. We were treated to hospitality and a VIP tour of the Massey Ferguson stand. Campbell took the time to explain all the current innovations on the stand and gave us valuable insight into the future of agricultural engineering from his perspective. We then spent the rest of the two days exploring the show and what it had to offer.
“We wore custom-made gilets decorated with the university logo and the Massey Ferguson crest. Our smart attire caught the eye of many exhibitors and allowed us to create valuable connections with industry whilst acting as ambassadors for the university.
“Jamie Kyle and I spoke with many industry representatives about job prospects within their companies and received a huge amount of positive feedback, demonstrating the demand for Harper Adams Students in the agricultural engineering sector.
“Agritechnica is renowned for being the show where the latest innovations in agricultural engineering are released and it did not disappoint. The main highlights were gaining knowledge of the innovations demonstrated on the Massey Ferguson, Fendt, John Deere and Amazon stands, amongst many others.
“It was very interesting to see a particular focus on the development of precision farming and engineering by these major manufacturers, as this is an area which we focus on greatly during our studies. My visit to the show also allowed me to gather information and contacts relevant to my dissertation, which I am sure will be very beneficial.
I would like to thank the Douglas Bomford trust, Massey Ferguson – in particular my initial contact Mark Kitson – and Harper Adams Engineering department for their financial support for this trip as without it, it would not have been possible.”
Jamie Kyle, 22, and also a fifth year Master of Engineering student, from Girvan, Ayrshire, added: “Agritechnica is the world’s largest agricultural machinery and equipment show and we all felt that the opportunity to attend was too good to miss. The world’s leading agricultural equipment manufacturers and their suppliers showcase new products and innovations at the show
“As well as learning about new technologies, the show also provided an unrivalled opportunity to network with possible employers. I was approached numerous times by Harper Adams alumni who were now working in industry and by companies who have links with HAU. The demand for not just engineers but HAU engineers was constantly brought up by people within the industry and this gave me a lot of confidence in the security of my future as a Harper Adams Engineering graduate.
“We also acted as ambassadors for Harper Adams University, we were constantly asked about the university and the course by companies and the general public because of our branded gilets.
“I would like to add my thanks to the Douglas Bomford Trust, Massey Ferguson and Harper Adams University for their help in covering the cost of the trip. And to Massey Ferguson for their hospitality at the show and Campbell Scott for taking time out of his busy schedule to welcome us all and give his insight into the industry.”http://www.engineersjournal.ie/2015/11/20/students-attend-agritechnica-the-international-agricultural-engineering-showcase/http://www.engineersjournal.ie/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Aaaag11.jpghttp://www.engineersjournal.ie/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Aaaag11-300x280.jpgNewsagriculture
