At the invitation of the Lord Mayor of Cork city, Cllr Terry Shannon, the Chairman of the Cork region of Engineers Ireland Dr James Robinson paid a courtesy visit to Cork City Hall. Dr Robinson was accompanied by John Power, Director General of Engineers Ireland and members of the senior committee of the Cork region of Engineers Ireland.

The Lord Mayor and Dr Robinson discussed the valuable contribution made by engineers of all disciplines to Cork’s heritage. Irish Aid Rapid Response Corps seeks engineers

In 2007 Irish Aid, part of the Department of Foreign Affairs, created the Rapid Response Corps (RRC). After humanitarian emergencies, members of the RRC are seconded at short notice to UN agencies and Irish NGOs writes Fred Tottenham Chartered Engineer, member of the RRC. There are currently over 150 members of the RRC and approximately 25 of these are engineers.

Since its formation, the RRC have deployed 19 engineers to agencies such as Concern, the World Food Programme and UNICEF. Some of these are to traditional civil engineering roles, while others are in specific humanitarian areas; primarily supporting water, sanitation and hygiene promotion (WASH) and shelter projects. Deployments are typically for three months.

Members commit to leave within 72 hours of a request immediately after emergencies, such as the Haitian earthquake last year, but people generally have a week or two to prepare for an assignment.

This year the RRC is particularly looking for WASH engineers. Engineers with experience of water and sanitation projects in developing countries are encouraged to apply.
