Northern line extension hosts Engineers Ireland GB region
17 January 2017
The Engineers Ireland GB region provides a focal point for engineers of all disciplines in mainland Britain and actively encourages their continuous professional development through the delivery of a varied programme of lectures, seminars and networking events. It provides members working and living in Britain with a point of contact with Engineers Ireland. The region runs a full calendar of events through the year for members and non-members and one of these events was held recently at the Battersea Site offices for the Northern line extension.
The Northern line extension (NLE) will connect the existing Northern line to one of the biggest opportunity areas in London, Battersea and Nine Elms. The new section extends west from the existing underground Kennington Station and is targeting completion in 2020. The NLE will provide the catalyst for the creation of 16,000 new homes and 20- 25,000 new jobs. In addition, it will enhance access to employment for local people in the surrounding communities and integrate the area with the remainder of central London.
Last year Transport for London (TfL) awarded the contract to design and build the Northern line extension to FLO, a joint venture (JV) compromising Ferrovial Agroman and Laing O’Rourke. Ferrovial Agroman is the construction subsidiary of Ferrovial, one of the world’s leading investors in transport infrastructure with over 61,000 global force locally. Laing O’Rourke is a globally diverse engineering enterprise with a commitment to delivering excellent performance, founded on 166 years of experience.
The new section consists of two bored tunnels (northbound and southbound), each approximately 3.5km long, with two new London Underground stations; one at Nine Elms and one at Battersea; two ventilation and intervention shafts, a number of cross passages and two new step-plate junctions where the extension joins the existing line at the Kennington Loop.
The talk focused on digital engineering and how FLO is using the latest digital technology throughout the project lifecycle. A follow-up talk is already in planning for 2017.
