The inaugural Substation Safety Conference and Expo 2016 took place on November 8 and 9, 2016 at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin. The event, hosted by Powerpoint Engineering, was a great success with more than 400 people attending on each day.

Attendees represented more than 200 companies from industry including generating stations, utility companies, manufacturing plants, data centres, construction companies, facility managers, universities, health and safety experts, professional consultants and electrical contractors.

The conference was officially opened by Dermot Byrne, president of Engineers Ireland, with Byrne going on to chair the first day of the conference. Padraig Delaney, of the Health and Safety Authority, chaired day two.

In total, the conference had 16 expert guest speakers from America, the UK and Ireland. There was a strong focus on legislation, best practice, operator safety and equipment safety with guest speakers from ESB Networks, ESB International, NIE Networks, ABB, Sisk and Premium Power.

ArcWear’s Hugh Hoagland, who travelled from America, entertained the delegates with his presentation on Arc Flash PPE. “The interest and support for electrical safety shown at the Substation Safety Conference will enhance worker protection for all electrical workers in Ireland and is a testament to the spirit of worker protection,” he said.

In addition to the conference, 34 companies exhibited and showcased the ‘best in class’ in terms of the products, services and training that they offered.

Exhibitors included ABB, Siemens, Megger, Kirby, H&MV, Powerpoint Engineering and O’Hara Engineering. A full list of those that exhibited is available here.

Overall, the event feedback was positive with 95 per cent of attendees expressing strong overall satisfaction. This event raised awareness on a range of electrical safety issues and there are plans to hold a similar event in November 2017.

Further information, pictures and feedback are all available here.

Powerpoint Engineering would like to thank all those that participated and helped make it an ideal opportunity for industry experts to gather and share experiences and knowledge. This includes sponsors – Megger, ESB Networks, Enterprise Ireland, and Engineers Ireland – guest speakers, exhibitors and the people who took the time to attend the two-day event.
