President Michael D Higgins is to give the opening address at the Engineers Ireland Annual Conference 2016, titled ‘Engineering Long Term Growth’, it has been announced.

The Engineers Ireland conference, to take place in the Hotel Kilkenny, on Friday, April 15, will address a number of key national issues, including how the sector can support a sustainable national economic recovery.

Hans van der Loo, an expert on risk and societal resilience and advisor to several international organisations including NATO, will also discuss at this year’s event Earth’s shift to a new era, ‘The Anthropocene’, which began with the first atomic bomb test during the Manhattan project in New Mexico in 1945.

Bill Grimson, president of Engineers Ireland, said that this year’s conference would explore an array of high-priority national topics. “The Irish economy is on an upward trajectory and the country’s industry is steadily regaining confidence. With this growing confidence, it is now pertinent to ask at this year’s conference what the future holds for the Irish engineering sector and where we should focus our talents and investment to support sustainable economic growth.

“The eclectic mix of high-profile national and international industry leaders that are gathering at this year’s event will also broach topics such as innovation in engineering, how to bring learnings from the sports world to the engineering sector, and how to safeguard our natural resources. We look forward to a vibrant event in the Kilkenny Hotel,” added Grimson.

In addition to President Higgins, Hans Van der Loo and Bill Grimson, the one-day event will feature contributions from Dara Lynott, deputy director general, EPA, Stephen Armstrong, professor of innovation at the University of Toronto, Brian Cody, Kilkenny senior hurling manager and Anne-Marie Tierney-Le Roux, south east regional manager, IDA Ireland.
