Minister White appoints two Fellows of Engineers Ireland to Board of EirGrid

Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alex White obtained Government approval earlier this year for the appointment of Michael Hand and Gerry Walsh to the Board of EirGrid.
EirGrid is the electricity Transmission System Operator in Ireland, and its subsidiary company, SONI (System Operator, Northern Ireland), is the Transmission System Operator in Northern Ireland. EirGrid also owns and operates the East-West Interconnector with the UK.
“I am very pleased that Michael and Gerry have accepted my invitation to serve as members of the Board of EirGrid,” said Minister White.
“Both candidates bring a wealth of experience in senior leadership roles in large organisations and in complex planning and development. I have every confidence that they will provide drive and vision in delivering a sustainable transmission system that supports both economic and social needs.”
Michael Hand was appointed to the EirGrid Board in July 2015 for a period of five years. He has more than 30 years’ experience as a senior leader in the consulting engineering and construction sectors in Ireland and latterly as CEO and director of Grangegorman Development Agency.
Hand is highly qualified in engineering and business and is a Fellow of Engineers Ireland. He holds a degree in Civil Engineering and a Master’s in Business Administration.
Gerry Walsh was appointed to the Board of EirGrid on July 22, 2015. Walsh is an experienced director in private and state sectors. He also works as an adviser and business consultant in strategic management and leadership team performance management and is also an experienced executive coach.
He is a non-executive director in a number of companies in private and public sectors. Gerry was CEO of Bord Gais Eireann from 2000 to 2007, is a UCC Engineering and MBA graduate and is a Fellow of Engineers Ireland.
