Energia is to build a major new €145 million wind farm that will provide enough electricity to power 70,000 Donegal homes.

The Meenadreen Extension wind farm in Co Donegal will use 38 Nordex N90 turbines to provide over 255 gigawatt hours each year and will also involve the construction of a new €11 million substation. The new substation will contribute to strengthening the electricity network in Donegal

Peter Baillie, managing director, Energia Renewables said the company is delighted to reach financial close on the development of its flagship 95MW Meenadreen Extension wind farm project. “The development of this new wind farm is a very positive step forward for renewable energy in Ireland and this is something that is very important to us.

“Energia currently supplies over 795MWs of renewable energy to homes and businesses across Ireland,” he continued. “We are on track to supply over 1,000MWs by the middle of this decade. Energia Group remains one of the most significant contributors to the achievement of Ireland’s renewable targets and one of the largest investors in the renewable sector.

Energia’s operational windfarm portfolio, which combines power from Energia’s windfarms and power from third party windfarms contracted to Energia under power purchase agreements, currently supplies 795MWs of green power. This will increase by a further 300MWs of ‘green’ power by a number of wind farm facilities, including Meenadreen, which are currently in development.
