Hailo co-founder, Jay Bregman, is to launch a Dublin based drone start-up in that will build simple, trusted verification and control systems for all drones. With the “crown jewels” of development to be located in Dublin, the start-up will begin hiring engineers in Ireland imminently.

The company, called Verifly, will be based between Dublin and New York, with engineering staff based in Dublin while other executive functions will work from the US. Verifly will partner with pilots, manufacturers, regulators, insurers and privacy advocates to develop built-in compliance technology. This technology includes: flight and activity restrictions; a secure, global identification registry for pilots and drones; a secure, global registry of drone and operator activity.

Following a number of high profile cases of drones disrupting flight paths and crashing into public buildings, the purpose of Verifly’s technology will be to prevent the small flying machines crashing into planes and public places. There have been recent reports of near misses involving drones at Heathrow Airport, while a another drone travelled through restricted airspace and landed on the lawn of the US White House in January of this year.

Bregman, speaking to the Irish Independent, said Verifly will ensure that drones do not enter zones they should not be in. “Right now, manufacturers, aviation authorities and public safety bodies are trying to figure out what to do with drones. What we’re building from Dublin and New York is a system of verifying drones so that they don’t enter zones they’re not supposed to be in,” he said.

Bregman confirmed that the most important aspects of Verifly’s engineering and research will happen in Dublin. “All the intellectual property as well as the crown jewels of development, which is all of the geospatial engineering, will be in Dublin. We’re putting operations and ground-breaking development there,” he concluded.
